Start with these steps
- Choose PDF to Word and select the scanned PDF.
- Choose Editable text, enable OCR and select the appropriate printed languages, or Keep page appearance for an image-based DOCX.
- Convert, read any result notices, and proofread the Word document before editing or sharing.
Decide whether you need editable words or preserved appearance
A scan contains pictures of pages. Keeping page appearance places those page images into a Word document, which preserves the visual layout but does not make the words inside each image editable.
Editable conversion extracts selectable PDF text and can attempt OCR where pages are scanned. In SafePDFHub, the resulting text can be positioned in text boxes rather than reflowing like an ordinary Word paragraph. Layout and fonts can still change, so choose the output according to what you need to do next.

| Need | Useful starting choice | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Edit recognized words | Editable text with OCR explicitly enabled | Recognition and layout require proofreading. |
| Keep stamps and page layout together | Keep page appearance | Words inside page images are not editable. |
| Reuse an uncertain scan | Inspect result notices and compare the source | Some pages may remain images instead of unreliable text. |
Select the language and inspect scan quality
OCR supports English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Hindi and Marathi. Enable OCR first; it is off by default in PDF to Word. Choose the language that matches the source text. This is recognition, not translation: selecting English does not translate a Hindi page into English.
Straight, clearly printed text is generally easier to recognize than blurred, skewed, faint, or highly decorated material. A clearer scan is often more valuable than repeatedly converting a damaged source. Low-resolution scans and tables are attempted when OCR is enabled. Unreliable recognition may remain as images, and result notices identify image-only pages.
Proofread the details that can change the meaning
Compare names, dates, amounts, decimal points, and reference numbers with the original. OCR can confuse visually similar characters even when the surrounding sentence looks plausible. Check headers and footers as well as the main body.
For Hindi or Marathi, inspect words and character marks closely in Word rather than judging only the page preview. If a page remains an image, do not assume its content was lost: the converter may have retained the appearance because editable recognition was uncertain. A page image and editable text are different deliverables.
Understand the current workflow limits
PDF reading, OCR, and DOCX generation run locally in the browser. OCR code and selected language assets load from the website, so local document processing is not the same as a promise that the first run works without internet access.
The converter accepts PDFs up to 200 MB with no fixed page-count limit, but scan quality, document complexity, browser memory, and processing time still matter. Unlock protected files first with the document password, and ensure that you are allowed to copy or convert the content.
Check the finished file
- The output mode matches the need for editable text or appearance.
- The OCR language matches the source.
- Important words, numbers, and dates were compared with the PDF.
- Image-only page notices were reviewed rather than ignored.
