Start with these steps
- Read the destination’s exact size limit and keep an untouched copy of your PDF.
- Open Compress PDF, choose your file, and enter the target size in MB.
- Run compression, check whether the actual size meets the target, and inspect the downloaded PDF.
Choose a target that matches the destination
An application portal, email service, or document system may impose its own byte limit. Read that requirement before editing the file. SafePDFHub uses decimal MB for target sizes: 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Other software may display binary units or round the size differently.
If the destination says the file must be below a limit, leave a little room rather than relying on a rounded display value. A target of 1.9 MB can be a sensible attempt for a 2 MB limit, but the receiving service remains the final test.
Scroll sideways to compare all columns.
| Required size | Target field example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 100 KB | 0.1 MB | Fine text can become unreadable at very small targets. |
| 200 KB | 0.2 MB | Check every page; not all documents can fit. |
| 1 MB or 2 MB | 1 or 2 MB | Use a value below the limit if the destination requires strictly less. |
| 5 MB, 10 MB, or 20 MB | 5, 10, or 20 MB | Compare the actual downloaded result with the destination’s rule. |
A smaller number can require a different tradeoff
Lossless optimization changes how data is stored without deliberately lowering image quality. It can help when a PDF contains avoidable overhead, but it cannot force a large collection of detailed scans into an arbitrarily small file.
Image compression can create more room by changing supported image data. Readability matters more than a percentage-saved badge: a file that fits but obscures an identification number or diagram may be unusable. Start with a moderate choice and compare the result before trying the strongest setting.
If the target is not met
Keep the smallest readable result and check the target status shown by the tool. Trying the same setting again on an already optimized output often provides little additional saving. Repeated image compression can also accumulate visible damage.
If the recipient allows it, extract only the required pages, split the document into accepted parts, or recreate oversized source images at an appropriate resolution. Do not remove required pages, stamps, or evidence simply to satisfy a file-size rule. Compress PDF accepts up to 300 MB on supported desktops. Smaller device limits and image-format support still affect how close a result can get to the target.
Check the finished file
- The actual output is below the destination’s limit.
- The output has the expected page count and order.
- Small text, signatures, stamps, and diagrams remain readable.
- The file opens normally after downloading, and the destination accepts it.
